Quarantine Social Isolation Hibernation Box
Exhibition View
The practice of quarantine and social isolation felt claustrophobic to many, and that is what inspired the artist for the first piece in this work, the Isolation Box (installation 1). The idea is that one can stay inside of it and sleep the quarantine out. It is made to be a safe spot, a tiny room with the size of a single mattress and 90cm height (enough for Camilio to sit if he wakes up from hibernation), made of rustic wood and totally isolated – except for eight small holes fitted with antibacterial-antiviral filters which also protect from dust, Co2, etc.
Inside there are some essentials: the floor is covered by a mattress, and there’s a drip, oxygen, light, fan, heart monitor – basically, all that is needed to use/operate it individually. The box opens and closes from the inside and has four glass windows to lessen the claustrophobic feeling.
Using the concept of hibernation, one would need coma-inducing medicine and special hypercaloric food to be consumed the weeks before going in. this special diet would need to give 250.000 calories, the minimum amount needed for an adult man to survive for 3 months. IN the case of 2 weeks, the amendatory quarantine time in Timor-Leste, less is needed.
The box is a building packed, no glue, no screws, so easy to dismantle or build up, so easiness of transportation and storage is assured.
The box is made of two trees, replanted by six other trees.
